Armed forces found the bodies of two people at the border on Tuesday, who said the bus driver fled the scene when he stopped.

According to police, about 30 people were on board and most are believed to be from Syria.

After the minibus was intercepted by the Austrian armed forces, the two men were believed to be in their twenties. The cause of his death remains unclear.

Helicopters, drones and dogs chased the minibus driver after the body was found, but they were not found.

The incident comes six years after the 2015 deaths of 71 refugees in Hungary who were found dead after suffocating in a sealed lorry.

Hans Peter Doskozyl, governor of the Burgenland region in eastern Austria, described the similarity between Tuesday’s deaths and those in 2015 as “horrifying”.

He said Tuesday’s incident exposed “the cruelty and inhumanity of organized human trafficking” and called for European-wide reforms of the asylum process.
