of James Gunn suicide squad What was an R-rated smash hit and a huge treat for DC fans still soured at the first attempt at making a film around the villainous team. While some elements were carried over from that earlier film, the new mostly cleans the slate with a fun and frantic tone and a ton of new characters. One of them – Idris Elba’s Bloodsport – quickly became a fan favorite. While the outfit given to him certainly helped with that, one of the character’s fashion choices was apparently made by the actor himself.
Elba’s Bloodsport is a new character for the movies
In the film, Elba plays Robert Dubois, also known as Bloodsport. A professional assassin with a dark past, he is assigned as the leader of Task Force X on his mission to Corto Maltese. Initially reluctant and with little patience for his comrades and their problems, he grows up to take care of the criminals under his command and, with them, ends up saving the world from a giant alien starfish.
The inclusion of Bloodsport in the film is somewhat unexpected. In the comics, he is a fairly minor Superman villain who only appears in a few issues. Even during filming, Gunn wrote the character’s name Vigilante. As a reference to another minor villain, as a way to confuse everyone who might be leaking the script. However, beyond this original (he is sent to prison for shooting Superman with a Kryptonite bullet), the character was extensively remodeled for the film.
For starters, this bloodsport has a different daughter who indirectly inspires him to be a better person. His appearance and powers are also reworked, replacing him with technological implants that allow him to teleport guns in his hands to a biometric-activated smart weapon that changes shape as he uses it. . Overall, he’s just a more fun character and a worthy replacement for the previous film’s Deadshot, which Elba was originally rumored to play.
The cast (Idris Elba included) chose their clothes for a major scene
In the middle of the film, the squad goes undercover to take out Peter Capaldi’s The Thinker, trading in their colorful supervillain gear for more simple outfits. While everyone looks good (special mention goes to the polka-dot man (David Dustmalchian) with his disco-inspired flair), an onlooker can’t help but notice Bloodsport’s flashy beret.
Clearly, the decision was up to Elba, proving definitively that he has great taste. Gun replied to a fan Twitter who brought it up saying that the actors were allowed to choose what they wanted to wear for this particular scene. Beyond “some guidance”, they were allowed – like their characters – to make their wardrobes out of clothes pulled out of a box. While this is only a small detail in the grand scheme of things, it has certainly given each member of the squad some additional characterization.
Future Bloodsport performances unclear, but there’s reason to hope for more
According to Gun On Twitterhandjob suicide squad Bloodsport may finally have its only appearance. While HBO Max has a spinoff series about John Cena’s Peacemaker in development, Gunn says there are no new projects with the character of Elba at this time. However, he adds that the character is likely to reappear in the “near future” in his tweet. What he’s hinting at is anyone’s guess, though it certainly would be fun to see him spar (verbally or physically) again in the aforementioned spinoff show with Peacemaker.
