Copenhagen, Denmark – In northern Denmark, an Ikea showroom turned into a spacious bedroom. Six customers and about two dozen employees were trapped by the blizzard and were sleeping through the night in the store, which usually happens at shows.
As the department store closed in Aalborg on Wednesday evening, 30cm of snow fell, trapping customers and employees.
“We slept in furniture exhibitions and our showroom on the first floor, where we have bedding, mattresses and sofa beds,” store manager Peter Elmos told Ekstra Bladet tabloid. People could “choose the exact bedding they’ve always wanted to try.”
Elmos said he spent the evening watching TV and eating, and it “went pretty well. It was a good night. All the fun.”
Danish public broadcaster DR said people working in a toy store next to Ikea also spent the night in the department store.
Michelle Barrett, one of the toy store employees, told DR, “It’s much better than sleeping in someone’s car. It’s been nice and warm and we’re glad they let us in.”
“We just laughed at the situation, because we probably won’t experience it again,” Barrett said.
