OTTAWA – The Department of National Defense says military police are investigating an incoming Canadian military commander.
Lieutenant General Trevor Cadeau was to assume his new position on 7 September.
In a written joint statement, the Department of Defense and the Canadian Armed Forces say Acting Defense Chief General Wayne Eyre decided to defer the change in command ceremony after being informed of the investigation.
In a separate statement, Cadiu says the allegations are false, but understands the decision to delay his installation as army commander until the investigation is complete.
Cadiu, who could not immediately be reached for additional comment, says he has already provided information and correspondence to military police and is looking forward to additional opportunities to cooperate with their investigation.
He says that “false claims, as intended, will raise doubts” as to whether he can take the lead and has asked Eyre to consider choosing someone else to command the Canadian military.
