A maverick Toronto MPP is urging Premier Doug Ford to protect the jobs of Ontarians who refuse vaccination or who refuse to share their vaccination status with their boss.
Independent MPP Roman Babar (York Center) told reporters in Queens Park on Tuesday that his proposed “Jobs and Jobs Act” would prevent employers from sacking or suspending workers because they did not have their COVID-19 shot.
Babar, who himself has been fully vaccinated, said his private member’s bill would also guarantee the privacy of employees who would not tell their employer whether they had been vaccinated.
“The goal is to protect jobs and preserve livelihoods,” said the MPP, who was removed from the Progressive Conservative caucus in January for publicly questioning the wisdom of pandemic lockdowns and warnings of a toll on Ontario’s mental health .
“Doug Ford … the slogan was ‘open for business, open for jobs,'” said the former Tory, who is “pro” when it comes to people’s personal health care decisions.
Lawyer Babar said, “After nearly 18 months of closing Ontario, Doug Ford is ready to leave countless Ontarios jobless and destitute, which he refers to as his choice.”
“Employers should be encouraged to use rapid testing when accommodating employees or no accommodation is possible. But under no circumstances, should any Ontarian lose his job because of a personal health choice.”
While the legislature is prorogued and will not resume until October 4, he would like the House to be recalled before Ontario’s mandatory proof-of-vaccine program takes effect on September 22.
Last month, Babar called Ford “a weak dictator” for expelling veteran MPP Rick Nichols (Chatham-Kent-Leamington) from the Tory caucus for refusing to vaccinate.
The premier, which has pushed vaccine mandates to health care workers, teachers and public servants, made no apology for his tough stance.
“Over the past year, I have repeatedly stood up to the people of Ontario and urged them to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible,” Ford said on August 19.
“The people of this province have responded to the ongoing threat of COVID-19 by making sacrifices to keep our families, our communities, themselves and others safe,” he said, calling the MPP an “example should lead to and… be right” held to a high standard. “
“It is my expectation that every PC Caucus member and candidate not only supports the role of vaccines in the fight against COVID-19, but also immunizations to protect themselves and those in their community.
