Inside BIG BIRD nuclear 1,150mph airliner that is bigger than Boeing 747

Looking more like a spacecraft than a plane – this giant plane could be the future of travel as it operates at supersonic speeds with a miniature nuclear reactor at its core.

The concept plane is known as the HSP Magnavum – Latin for “Big Bird” – and is expected to hit 1,150mph, meaning a flight from London to New York could take just three hours.

Boarding the plane ahead of your short hop across the Atlantic, you’ll find that the massive Arrowhead-like plane has two decks—business and first class above and “super camper” class below.

It is expected that the giant plane can comfortably seat 500 people – heavier than the largest passenger planes today, the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380.

And on top of those there can be “all imaginable luxuries” such as private suites and spas.

First class passengers will also get a view out to the world with roof windows above their seats, which can either be dimmed to a shade or brightened to allow a full view.

The 70-metre-long, 590,000 kg aircraft will then power its four massive engines which are located in the rear of the fuselage from a mini fusion reactor buried under the passenger deck.

The electrical energy would then rise through the aircraft’s batteries and send the aircraft flying high in the sky – up to an altitude of 15,400 metres.

And then its ramjets would kick in while flying at supersonic speeds.

The larger aircraft will also have pilots equipped with an artificial intelligence equipped with laser guidance systems that will help the crew monitor the engines and steer the craft.

The typical aircraft will also be dotted with solar panels – with a flight-wing type design, further adding to the aircraft’s fuel savings as its battery charges as it takes off.

The Magnavem will be slightly slower than the legendary Concorde which can hit speeds of 1353mph as it takes people from Europe to the Americas in transatlantic luxury.

But it is hoped that the concept aircraft will solve the problems that eventually put an end to dreams of supersonic travel when the combined British and French jets were retired in 2003.

The Concorde had died out of noise, expense, and small passenger capacity – as air travel became more and more affordable, so did the price of the Easy Plane.

However, with more quiet engines, a larger passenger capacity and hopefully cheaper tickets – designer Oscar Vinles hopes the Magnavem can bring the world back to the golden age of supersonic travel.

All imaginable luxuries like private suites, washrooms, spa and virtual reality

He explained that he wants ambitious aircraft like his concept that would usher in a “new era” in the skies – with faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly aircraft.

Spain’s Oscar told Online: “It can have two decks with a capacity of 500 passengers, a ‘super camper’ class with a modular system that can accommodate between 280 and 360 seats with a generous ‘personal space’ , A 140 seats for first class and business class, with amazing views above their heads and all imaginable luxuries like private suites, washrooms, a spa and virtual reality.”

He explained that his futuristic concept is based on reality – being a mix between modern aircraft and the theoretical technologies to come.

And he hopes the design will contribute to a more efficient aircraft that could in theory mean cheaper plane tickets.

“As a major power source, the HSP ‘Magnavam’ will be equipped with a compact fusion reactor (CFR-portable) and hydrogen fuel.

“The aircraft can be equipped with four oversized hybrid engines powered by electric-hydrogen fuel and two ramjet engines.

However, no one has yet committed to building and testing one of Oscar’s monster machines.

“Due to the fact that almost all the technology in this concept is highly innovative, only universities and institutions such as experts in the aeronautical field are of interest,” he explained.

However, he hopes that as these technologies develop, his designs will be picked up and one day taken to the skies.

a new era’

Oscar first became interested in airliners as a hobby – with his main career working as a designer in high performance cars and motorsport.

He said: “I became interested in aeronautics after a bad experience during a flight that fortunately only ended in a major scare.

“My interest in learning more about airplanes and all their aspects became a more serious ‘hobby’ and based on my personal study of them, with the goal of trying to ‘improve’ commercial airplanes of the future.” On designing concepts and how would it be possible to get a viable design.

“I don’t design concepts just to be beautiful or to have a sci-fi experience, all projects are based on previous technician studies with very accurate information, so the result is a realistic and viable concept.”

This comes as we revealed the incredible concept design of the Aerocon Wingship, an extraordinary 3,000-passenger design for a massive ekranoplan flying boat.
