Anthony Joshua is looking for new ideas and a new coach to revive his career after the loss of Oleksandr Usic.

Initially, it was thought that AJ would remain loyal to their longtime coach Rob McCracken, although the defeat was heavily criticized by the Ukrainian for the gameplan.

Ronnie Shields, who works with Jermael Charlo and coached the likes of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Arturo Gatti, revealed that ‘the team reached AJ’.

He told ThaiBoxingVoice: ‘They reached out to me and they asked if I would be interested in taking a look at AJ and that he wanted to come to Texas and see if things would settle down between him and me.

‘I said, ‘Never mind, I’d love to see if we had a relationship together.’

It is unclear at this stage whether Joshua plans to retain McCracken’s services and whether their working relationship has driven it. He may also have to relocate to the US if he decides to set up a new one.

But Shields said he had a good meeting with the British star and even served as a pad to explain some of his ideas.

He continued: ‘It would be great to get him to recapture the world title he lost to him and I think I have the ability to help him do that.

‘Everything was going well for the last two days. The first day we talked for about three or four hours and today when he came back we did some light pad work to show him everything we talked about.

‘You have to be able to show a fighter what you really mean and how he should think. We did some light work and I put him through some exercises to help him understand what he had said the day before.

‘For me it’s about the gameplan. We talked about a lot of things and we watched a few rounds of Usyk together. I told some things he should have done but he didn’t.

‘I think our chemistry was really good, but I’m not going to sleep anymore’ [whether he chooses me].’

It was widely accepted that AJ’s team made a mistake in attempting to outbox him the cunning Usik and that he should have used his weight and power advantage to intimidate his opponent.

The pair will match again and Joshua will have a chance to win back his title, which could set up the huge home performance with Tyson Fury that many fans are eager to see.
