Israel has carried out airstrikes in Gaza, killing 15 people, including a senior terrorist commander and a five-year-old girl.
In retaliation, the Palestinian terrorist group Islamic Jihad said it fired more than 100 rockets at Israel, warning of air strikes in the country’s south and central parts.
An explosion was heard in Gaza City, where smoke emanated from the seventh floor of a high-rise building on Friday afternoon.
In a nationally televised speech, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said his country had launched attacks based on concrete threats.
“This government has a zero-tolerance policy for any type of attack attempt from Gaza toward Israeli territory,” he said.
“Israel will not sit idly by when there are people who are trying to harm its citizens.

“Our fight is not with the people of Gaza. Islamic Jihad is an Iranian proxy that seeks to destroy the State of Israel and kill innocent Israelis.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said the dead included a five-year-old girl and a 23-year-old woman, and another 55 were injured.
Islamic Jihad said that the commander of northern Gaza, Taisir al-Jabri was among those killed.
He had succeeded another terrorist killed in an airstrike in 2019.
Islamic Jihad has been blacklisted as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States.
Smoke rose from a building where al-Jabari was apparently killed and glass and rubble were scattered across the road amid the sound of ambulances rushing at other sites.
Hundreds of people marched in a funeral procession for him and others killed, with many mourners waving Palestinian flags and banners of Islamic Jihad calling for revenge.
Israeli media showed the skies over southern and central Israel illuminated with rockets and interceptors from Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

The measures came after the arrests in the occupied West Bank of two senior members of Islamic Jihad, which have a strong presence in Gaza.
