Peter Schmeichel has told Jadon Sancho to imitate Cristiano Ronaldo if he wants to be good at Manchester United – even if it takes three years.

The England winger has struggled to make much of an impact at Old Trafford since his £73million transfer from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

They told seaman podcast says: ‘You are a young player in that team, for example someone like Jadon Sancho.

‘It’s a big, big, big price tag for that and it feels a little heavy for that at the moment.

‘But he’ll see this man [Ronaldo] And he might say, “If I do something along those lines, I can be as good as him. I have all the basics, but I can be as good as them.”

‘It may take two, three years for him to catch on, but after that he probably gets ten, 12 years.

That’s what Ronaldo gives. I was celebrating when I heard he was returning, running around my garden like crazy, even though I can’t run. But I did.

Unlike Sancho, Ronaldo wasted little time reminding everyone at United how good he is with four goals in the first three games of his second spell with the club.

The forward then dramatically scored the winner in the 96th minute as United beat Villarreal in their second Champions League group fixture, a campaign they lifted at home in Atalanta on Wednesday night.

Club legend Schmeichel compared the impact of Ronaldo’s return to the arrival of Eric Cantona in 1992.

He said: ‘This is what he brings. He’s 36, turning 37 now, but he looks chiseled and we saw that when he scored a late goal in Europe the second week.

‘He is fantastically fit and that is because he takes his football so seriously. He eats, sleeps, drinks and trains football, his whole life is about that.

‘I remember when Eric came in, he did something different in our dressing room or the whole character of the club because he was different, he did things differently.

‘Before you knew it, some young players were starting to do this and they were still developing. Nevilles, Scholes and Nicky Butt, they looked at Eric and started talking to him.

‘Together [United coach] Eric Harrison had a good football education and was probably 97 percent ready to go there.

‘Those three percent, the last bit, came from Eric and that made him a little different from the other players he was in his position against. Same is the case with Cristiano.
