Smiling into his camera, Dale tries to pose to take a selfie, but is quickly swept away by a loud wave.

Amazingly, the roofer broke only the index finger of his right hand despite being crushed by rocks.

He even managed to retrieve it despite dropping his phone into the water – which also captures his version of the incident as the wave engulfs him.

When he shared it online, his ‘dangerous’ stunt was met with backlash, with many claiming it could be an entry into the Darwin Awards, although Dale laughed at critics and said that ‘life is literally meant to be lived. ‘.

Dale, from Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, said: “We had just come back from the gym when we realized how close we were to Giant’s Causeway and wanted to run and see it.

“We’re only over for a few weeks while we were contracted for the work. We wanted to take the opportunity to do some sightseeing and I’ve always wanted to see it.

“I didn’t want to miss the chance to see it. There are some things that say the rocks are slippery but I wanted a selfie with the waves. We were drenched right before the video started.

“I broke the index finger of my right hand. Luckily it didn’t stop me working, I’ve definitely been through a lot worse.

“Me and Aaron have been friends for life. He’s just used to my hijinks, he just shakes his head and rolls his eyes at me.”

Footage of Dale getting wet has been viewed more than 150,000 times online, with people saying he should be up for the ‘Darwin Prize’ and has a ‘death wish’.

One person said: “Darwin Prize nominee.”

Another said: “Lucky you didn’t pass out.”

One commenter wrote: “Doing so is seriously dangerous and endangering the lives of rescue operations. Incredibly foolish behavior.”

In response, a defiant Dale said: “Many people have said that I wish to die or that I should be up for the Darwin Awards, but I don’t see the point in living my life in fear of things.

“Life is really meant to be lived. All these people who sit under the covers in their homes, afraid to go out, what kind of life is this?”
