US President Joe Biden has defended the diplomat responsible for the death of British teenager Harry Dunn, saying the crash in which he died was “not a deliberate act”.
The case was challenged by reporters during Boris Johnson’s White House visit, with Mr Biden giving no indication that he was ready to reverse the US refusal to extradite Anne Sacoolas.
Asked whether the State Department employee would be sent to the UK to face justice in criminal court, he only said the case was “being worked on” and that he was not aware of its current status.
Mr Biden’s remarks came soon after the family of 19-year-old Harry reached an offer with Ms Sacoolas, who was driving on the wrong side of the road when his car hit him with his motorcycle in Northamptonshire in 2019.
“Based on what I’ve been told it wasn’t a deliberate act, it was someone who was new to driving on the wrong side of the road,” Biden said.
“I expressed my sympathy, but I don’t know the status of the matter right now.”
