LeBron James was fined $15,000 by the NBA on Friday for an obscene gesture that also warned the Lakers superstar about using hate speech.

James gestures after a late shot in Los Angeles’ 124-116 overtime win in Indiana on Wednesday night.
He had missed a loss in New York the night before when he was suspended a game for hitting Detroit center Isaya Stewart in the face and drawing blood last Sunday. He used abusive words in his postgame interview after the win in Indiana while discussing the suspension.
Also on Friday, the NBA fined Portland’s Robert Covington $15,000 for throwing his facemask in front of the referee on Wednesday. With 49 seconds remaining in the second quarter of the Trail Blazers’ 125–121 defeat in Sacramento, he was given a technical foul and ejected for that action.
