Leonardo has not given up hope of keeping Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain beyond next summer, as the club’s sporting director lashed out at Real Madrid for their efforts to award the star away from France.

Mbappé, 22, has long been linked with a switch to the Bernabeu, with the Frenchman being the subject of a £154 million bid in the summer transfer window.

However, Leonardo says the club is confident they can hold on to Mbappe for next season, insisting that the World Cup winner is still their ‘jewel’.

‘Nothing has changed in our plans. Kian is a jewel, he is incredibly perfect for PSG… [Messi], NS. We have never planned PSG future without Mbappe.

Leonardo also took aim at Madrid for his dog chase of Mbappe, claiming he ‘should be punished’ for attempting to land the Frenchman on a free transfer.

‘They deny Madrid, but I think Real Madrid are working to buy Mbappe’ [as a free agent] for a long time,’ he said. ‘For two years they have been publicly speaking about Mbappe. It should be punished.

Mbappe confirmed this week that he wants to leave PSG in the middle of the summer to give Ligue 1 giants time to source ‘quality’ replacements.

“I asked to leave, because from the moment I didn’t want to extend, I wanted the club to get a transfer fee for a quality replacement,” said Mbappe. RMC Sport.

‘It’s a club that gave me so much, I’ve always been happy, four years that I spent here, and I still am.

‘I announced long ago that the club could turn around. I wanted everyone to grow up to come out, hand in hand, make a good deal, and I respected that. I said, “If you don’t want me to go, I will.”
