The London trio – consisting of Poppy Hankin, Iris McConnell and Sophie Moss – began performing Ellis-Bexter’s 2001 hit during their set last festive season, calling it a “really perfect pop song”. All proceeds from their cover will go to Hackney Night Shelter.

Girl Ray said in a statement: “‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ has always had a special place in our hearts – it was forever etched in our memory when in a post-show karaoke session in Bristol a few years ago , I was overjoyed when it was finally our turn to sing, shoved the microphone to Iris’ lips, cutting her front teeth in half for the rest of the tour.

“It’s definitely remained our karaoke song since then, and a favorite on our DJ sets. When we were looking for a song to cover for this year’s festive season, it seemed like a natural fit. It became one of our favorite parts of our live set, and we thought it would be perfect to record it in honor of Sophie Ellis-Bexter’s truly perfect pop song.”

The cover is accompanied by a video that shows the trio at an office Christmas party, directed by Hankin. You can watch it below.

The band said of the video: “We’ve always wanted to work together in an office; I think we’re secretly middle-aged office workers at heart. Neither of us went to an office party.” But they look really fun so we decided to recreate one for our video.

“It felt like ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ was a song that would look great at an office party. Poppy seemed really excited about her new ‘gimble’ she bought for her iPhone, so we asked her to film, direct. and decided to edit the whole video. We couldn’t find an actual office to make the video, so Moshi Moshi reluctantly let us use his work space for this. Hopefully he’ll give us full time after watching the video “

Last month, Sophie Ellis-Bexter raised more than £1 million in a 24-hour charity dance marathon needy children,

The singer began to dance non-stop all day and night on the morning of November 16. Along the way, she performed karaoke on several tracks, performed routines with a ribbon, sang with Tony Blackburn and changed into various sparkly costumes and animal masks.

The challenge was streamed live on BBC iPlayer, with the star dancing to a track by the likes of Abba, Beyoncé and Take That.
