Lorde discusses leaving social media and being an “elder statesman at 24”

“I didn’t know I wanted to be a TikTok girl, an Instagram Stories girl, and it was a real crossroads”

Lorde discussed her decision to quit social media at the age of 24 and consider herself a “big politician”.

The singer, who is releasing her third album “Solar Power” next month, returned this week with a new track “Stoned at the Nail Salon”.

While discussing the track in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, the pair also talked about Lorde’s minimal social media presence, and how she doesn’t use it in her personal life.

“I realized I was trying to come up with a weird Instagram caption and make a picture of me that looked good that I hope would get a certain amount of likes,” she told Lowe’s. “It sounds obvious, but it’s cooked.

“For me, I am not the kind of girl who gets a lot of likes. I am who I am, and I have to lean into that. I think for the last one I was 21 and still like kids, and then the culture started changing and I didn’t know I wanted to change with that. I had no idea I wanted to be a TikTok girl, an Instagram Stories girl, and it was a real crossroads.

She said: “I had to be like, ‘Do you want to be a kid? Or do you want to transition through this and become a grown-up politician at 24?’ Which I really feel like I am now, who I love, but it took a minute. I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m the kid?'”

‘Solar Power’ is slated to release on August 20. The album’s title track came out last month, marking Lorde’s first new material since 2017’s acclaimed “melodrama.”

Speaking about his new album, which is co-produced by Jack Antonoff, the singer-songwriter said: “The album is a celebration of the natural world, attempting to immortalize the deep, sublime feelings I have when I’m outside. is.

“In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I have learned to exhale and tune in. That’s what happened.”

Lorde will take ‘solar power’ on the road next year, with UK live dates set for May and June. She will perform with The Strokes, Tame Impala and others at Primavera Sound in Barcelona next summer.
