Anna Reid, 22, who comes from a family of multi-millionaire horse racing breeders and trainers in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was found dead by paramedics in a hotel room in Switzerland in April 2019.

German-born former bouncer Mark Schetzl, 32, has been charged with intentional murder, theft, fraud and drug offenses.

The lawsuit in the Swiss city of Lugano said Mr Schatzle owed more than £40,000 to buy drinks, drugs and designer clothes. He reportedly knew there were “over £25,000” in Ms Reid’s bank account.

A few months after his death, his credit card was found hidden behind a panel in the elevator of the luxury La Palma au Lac hotel in the municipality of Muralto on Lake Maggiore, where he was killed.

The pair met in Thailand just two months before Ms Reid’s death, while she was on a worldwide tour during her post-university gap year.

They then traveled to Vietnam, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates together and posted pictures of them staying in hotels on their social media accounts.

The court heard that Ms Reid had spent around £3,000 a month during her visit, but that number had reportedly “increased significantly” after meeting Mr Schatzl. But it is also alleged that Mr Schetzl traveled using proceeds from an insurance scam.

The Swiss court heard from hotel guests that on the night he was killed, they heard screams from room 501.

One said: “I heard the glass and furniture being pushed loudly around the room.

“Was crying. A voice said, ‘You’re killing me’ or ‘You’re kidding me’. I wanted to go and say something but I thought it was too dangerous.”

After the alleged argument, Mr Schatzl went into the lobby at around 6.30 pm to say that Ms Reed was unwell, it is claimed.

A hotel source told many times: “The receptionist could tell by his tone that it was serious, the so-called ambulance.

“The doctors went straight to the room. She was on the bathroom floor. They tried to revive her but there was no response. She was already dead.”

The postmortem revealed that he had suffocated, and had cuts and bruises.

Mr Schatzley, a father of two children, denied intentionally killing Reed, and claimed she died of sexual asphyxiation.

She told the court: “I put a towel around her neck and started kissing her. But she wanted more so I put my hand on the towel and pushed.”

Trial continues.
