He was declared brought dead on the spot at Kipling Way, while two passengers aged 31 and 28 suffered serious injuries and two other passengers aged 31 and 30 suffered minor injuries.

The incident occurred during torrential rains, which have flooded London and the South East today.

The capital was drenched overnight as Hurricane Auror lashed Britain with strong winds and dropped two inches of rain.

Snow also knocked to the north, with the A939 in the Speyside region of Scotland seeing the white stuff this morning as traffic battling its way through the snow.

Further rain and strong winds are expected, giving “significant wind blowing”.

Meanwhile, cars were seen passing through flood waters in Essex, London and Surrey.

Washouts in England also affected the South West and could lead to further travel chaos with transport delays, flooding of roads and power issues.

Surrey Police urged drivers to travel with caution in wet conditions after a car overturned on a flooded road in Farnborough last night.

And with a “winter” weather over some northern hills, rain is likely to continue in the west and north today.

Forecasters have warned that things will feel cold today with temperatures expected to drop to 4C in Newcastle and Manchester.

The mercury could also drop to 2C in parts of Scotland, with snow on the northern hills as well as hail and rain in the low-lying areas.

It comes after Hurricane Auror moved from France, bringing 50 mm of rain and 70 mph winds to the worst-affected areas.

Thunderstorms reached 70 mph in the Channel Islands, while the Met Office yesterday issued a yellow rain warning covering most of southern England and lasting through Thursday.

An Amber Alert was also put in place for flooding in England, and 23 warnings and 85 alerts remain in place.

flood warning

The Essex Fire Service said they had received more than 120 calls regarding flood-related incidents as of 2.30 pm.

Elsewhere, the Thameslink Railway issued a landslide warning on the Greenheath Tunnel in London, blocking all lines.

Four people had to be pulled out of a car stuck in flood waters in Carnaval at around 8 pm last night.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said the driver and three passengers managed to climb onto the roof of the car and were rescued using a throw line.

Devon County Council’s Highway Control is also dealing with 80 incidents in which trees have been felled amid the chaos.

The Met Office issued a yellow rain warning for southern counties and the Channel Islands until 3 a.m. on Thursday, but said the storm’s most severe impact would be on northern France.

It said unstable weather was likely to continue for the rest of the week, with rain and wind conditions over western Scotland and some areas of central and northern England and Wales on Friday.

high winds

Meteorological Office forecaster Becky Mitchell said: “We have received a yellow rain warning that will last through the remainder of Wednesday at 3 a.m., covering the southern counties and the Channel Islands.

“The areas covered by the warning will see heavy and continuous rain, mostly between 15-25 mm, but a few places will see a possible 30 mm or more of thunderstorms.

“Very strong winds are also likely, typically around 45mph on the coasts, reaching 70mph in the Channel Islands.

“This could cause some disruption to commuters tomorrow morning, as there could be flooding in some places – while there could be power outages due to the effects of thunder.”

It comes as strong winds sent down trees to the ground and destroyed brick walls in Cheshire yesterday.

Shocking footage revealed a trail of destruction in Widnes, when it was walled up by a 30-second ‘twister’ with roof tiles, garden furniture and wheelie coaches scattered across residential streets.

With the heaviest rain expected in western Scotland, forecasters have forecast more continuous rain over the weekend, with 40-60 mm of fall expected in 24 hours.

Northern Ireland, northern England and Wales may receive up to 20 mm of rain, while the southern and central regions will receive light rain.
