But one player who looks set to revive his United career is Phil Jones, who will make his first appearance in 20 months in the Carabao Cup tie against West Ham on Wednesday.

Henderson was to be given the goalkeeper’s shirt this season before David de Gea.

But the 24-year-old has been suffering from covid for a long time and has been unable to make a bench so far this season.

De Gea has been in inspired form in that time – not least on Sunday when his injury-time penalty save earned United all three points at West Ham.

Henderson has been at United since the age of 14 and enjoyed two successful loan spells at Sheffield United.

He returned last summer with the belief that he could take the No. 1 spot from De Gea. However, his 13 appearances were not convincing.

But manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had him set to start this season until long-term covid initially made him unable to train.

He has played twice in Premier League 2 for Under-23s, in a 3–1 loss to Arsenal and a 2–1 win over Brighton.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer is trapped by the 29-year-old centre-back Jones, who has suffered a horrific injury problem.

His most recent knee surgery means he hasn’t played since his 6-1 FA Cup win at Tranmere in January 2020.

He made a brief appearance in the friendly back door Friendly against Burnley earlier this season and resumed training with the first team.

Meanwhile Henderson has been having private sessions at Carrington recently.

He’s still not up to full fitness with Tom Heaton on the bench against the Hammers over the weekend.

Heaton is likely to eventually make his debut for the club in the Carabao Cup against the same opponents West Ham.

He spent eight years at United as an apprentice.

After being released by Aston Villa at the end of last season, the 35-year-old returned to Old Trafford in July on a two-year deal.
