Manchester United have been sweating Bruno Fernandes’ fitness as they prepare to face Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

According to SunPortugal star Fernandes was ‘heavily limp’ for the warm-down session after United’s 3-2 win against Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

It will be a huge blow for United if the 27-year-old pulls out of a clash against Jurgen Klopp’s men on Sunday.

United have not won their last three Premier League matches and the narrow win over Atalanta has done little to cool the intense scrutiny over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his position as United manager.

United were trailed by two goals at half-time before Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo struck.

But Solskjaer will know that his side will have to be far better against Liverpool and Fernandes’ potential absence will represent a major setback.

Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 at the Wanda Metropolitano in midweek and finished second in the Premier League standings, one point behind leaders Chelsea.

If United are beaten by Liverpool on Sunday, they will be seven points behind their fierce rivals, with just nine league matches to go.

Fernandes has scored four goals in 12 appearances in all competitions for United so far this season.

Solskjaer also worries over Marcus Rashford, who got a dead leg against the Italian side but believes he will be made fit for Sunday.

Speaking after Wednesday’s win, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger suggested Solskjaer should start against Liverpool with Paul Pogba and Fred Fernandes in midfield.

Wenger told beIN Sports: ‘Pogba, I thought, well done. Pogba made more dangerous deliveries to give him more power from deep in midfield.

‘And when Pogba came, Fernandes got better. Fernandes had a bad first half, but he came alive in the second half as well.

And regarding Fred’s contribution, Wenger said: ‘I would personally highlight the second half for Fred.

‘Fred saved a few crosses in the box, excelled defensively and he worked incredibly hard in the second half.’
