Four weeks ago he suffered a tear in his calf and despite his best efforts, his last visit to his physio showed it had not healed.

Speaking to the physio table, a dismayed Mark told fans: “I am with George Cooper at the moment, a physio I trust. I came here about four weeks ago with a minor tear in my calf. This got worse.

George then said: “It doesn’t have time to repair. It’s still not bad, but in two or three weeks time it might be okay, but if you want me to treat you like a normal customer , then I would advise you not to do that. Don’t even start this marathon. If you want to, tie it up and see how far you go. You can make it worse.”

“If I do this, it will be 10 times worse. Devastating after all this work.”

Mark was training with London Marathon winner Paula Radcliffe to get in shape for the 26-mile run.

On Friday, he looked excited as he collected his race number from the registration site.

He had a brief break before getting back to his grueling schedule celebrating his sister Jess’s wedding in Majorca last month.

In August Mark told us that father’s time was starting to creep up on him.

His time at Crawley Town FC last season was marred by injuries, something he never worries about, and he is feeling aches and pains training for the marathon.

He added: “Age is definitely showing this last year. I have never been a person with injuries. It didn’t stop at Crowley, it was just injury after injury from overload. In the run I just did, 10 milers, it was like my waist and hip flexors were getting tighter and it never used to. If I don’t do a marathon now, I never will.
