Moon Knight was originally conceived by Knight as a villain to fight Marvel’s werewolf. While their origin story has changed a bit as the years have gone by — because, you know, the comics — its fundamentals have remained basically the same, as Miracle telling.

Mark Spector, aka Moon Knight, comes from a respectable family but chooses to take his own course. He becomes a boxer, a Marine, and a CIA agent, just as one does. But his brother betrayed him and eventually became disillusioned with the CIA.

In his disillusioned state, he turns to hired work. His new career takes him to Egypt, where he is almost dead. But in his almost dead state, he comes to see the statue of an Egyptian god hovering over him. The deity, Khonshu, revives him and grants him superpowers in return for his service to the deity.

As Marvel explains, his powers include, “increased strength during nights with full moons, prophetic visions and dreams, and the ability to extract another person’s life energy through physical contact.”

Moon Night and Mental Health

Early in his history, Mark learns that his friend is basically an undercover fascist and serial killer. This traumatizes him and he develops an antisocial identity disorder, which causes his psyche to disintegrate into multiple personalities. And that comes into play later with his crime-fighting.

Accurately representing mental illness is, of course, complicated. and it has been done with varying degrees of success Moon Knight comics but having a character who is at least as candid about his mental health is important.

For example, Moon Knight is often compared to Batman. And some fans argue that Bruce Wayne apparently hasn’t processed the death of his parents, although his mental health challenges are rarely discussed. So talking openly about your mental health with Mark can be a good thing if addressed thoughtfully. Hopefully, the Disney+ series will deliberately discuss this aspect of his character.

Additionally, it’s important to note that this explanation for his mental health challenges was added at a later point in the character’s publication history and has shifted several times depending on the creators.
