In a video shared on Twitter, the 60-year-old – who has received death threats in the past for his animal activism – raised the possibility of him being killed by his opponents one day.

Describing the incident, he said: “So on Thursday night/Friday morning, at 12.30 am, two masked and masked men drove a vehicle right in front of my gate and set it on fire.

“They were fully aware of the CCTV that they took great pains to hide themselves. The car exploded and was swiftly and efficiently dealt with by HFR and the police were in attendance.

“As always they did a fantastic job but my property had not been extensively damaged before.”

Naturalist and broadcaster Packham described the scene outside his home as “hell”.

They told Mirror: “The gate is not visible from the bedroom, but certainly when it exploded, it exploded with a big bang that woke me and the dogs.

“It was a hell. The neighbors called the fire brigade and they got up and put it out.”

Packham branded the home attack, which he shared with partner Charlotte Corny and stepdaughter Megan, as a “vicious, cowardly act” as he vowed never to bully himself.

“I will not be afraid, nor will I bow down,” Packham insisted.

“I cannot and will not let your threats deviate from my path.”

Packham – who has killed dead animals at the gates of his home in the past – said he was disappointed by the lack of action against his trolls.

“I think of internet trolls as they get away with it,” he said.

‘Continuous abuse’

“Despite working effectively with the police, this as a law means I am unable to take any action against this type of harassment.

“But it’s a hate crime. There’s no ambiguity about it. It’s a bit unfair that when black footballers find an unfair and horrific hate crime this issue can be dealt with and that’s great and I totally appreciate it.” I support

“But when environmentalists like me receive similar hateful streams of relentless abuse, nothing can be done about it. Because it ultimately costs.

“Maybe it cost me burning my gate, which caused thousands of pounds in damage. And it’s certainly not the first action we’ve seen here. Dead animals are frequent.”

“But now it has escalated because they have damaged that property and I wonder where it is going. I mean what happens next? Are they going to burn down the house, will they kill my stepdaughter? Are they going to cut the brake line on my partner’s car?

“Or do they come straight for me? Are they going to kill me at some point? I think that’s a fair question.”

The tele presenter has seen dead animals tied up outside her home on several occasions, including two crows, after campaigning against the shooting of “insect birds”.

Another incident saw a dead fox thrown outside his house just days after the Boxing Day hunt was criticized.

Packham has received death threats before – including a chilling handwritten letter that read: “We Want You Dead”.
