Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell blasted President Biden’s pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a “morally conciliatory partisan lawyer” who abused his power during the Obama administration.

McConnell said in a fiery speech on Tuesday that he would vote against Alejandro Mayorkas to lead the DHS and urged his colleagues to do the same.

“As a highly-placed officer in the Obama administration, Mr. Mayorkas tried his best to turn on US citizenship and immigration services. [USCIS] In an immoral favor factory for Democratic Party royalty, “McConnell, R-K., Said.

McConnell presented an inspector general’s report in which the Mayurakas intervened to help foreign investors in the EB-5 visa program, which Democrats were associated with at the top.

McConnell said, “We are talking of shoing through the green card as a political favor, and intervening to deny it.”

McConnell also referred to a clemency scandal under former President Clinton and said that Mercus led to a “culture of fear and disdain” when he led USCIS.

“Does this sound like someone who deserves promotion?” McConnell said.

McConnell said he approved Biden’s previous nominees because they were a “mainstream” option, but Mayorkas “is something else.”

“He It does not deserve Senate confirmation to lead Homeland Security. McConnell said, to be honest, his record must be confirmed, even to the lower position.

“It is clearly notable that someone with this record is also up for a cabinet appointment,” McConnell said.

The Senate will vote Tuesday afternoon on the Mayurus nomination. Born in Havana, Cuba, Mayurakas will be the first immigrant to serve as head of the Department of Homeland Security.

Earlier Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y. , Praised Mayurakas’ merit and history-making nomination.
