The program was inspired by teacher appreciation campaigns at local restaurants and is a follow-up to last year “Thank You” Meals for First RespondersHeelan said.

McDonald’s introduced praise food for the first time in spring 2020, early in the coronavirus pandemic. During the two-week campaign, the restaurant served 1.2 crore meals to health care workers, police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

“We wanted to build on that idea and thank our teachers in our communities for what they are doing and what they really do every day,” Heelan said.

As a former teacher, Stephanie Cabrera Bentancourt, owner and operator of 18 McDonald’s in Miami, believes teachers will be touched by the gesture. Her restaurants have closed feeding schools during the pandemic and have held a MacTeachers Night fundraiser over the years.

“I know this is something that is being greatly appreciated,” she said, adding that teachers have had to pivot and adapt during the pandemic. “It’s a great way to get a bigger national spotlight on the people who really are the backbone of every profession that exists.”

To receive the free meal, McDonald’s says teachers must show a valid work ID at the restaurant drive-thru or counter. There is a limit of one per person during breakfast hours, which can vary by location, but usually ends at 10:30 a.m.

Entree options are the Egg McMuffin, Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit or Sausage Biscuit. Beverage options are moderately hot or iced coffee or soft drinks. Menu options may vary.

Although the food comes in Happy Meal boxes, McDonald’s will include a thank you note to the teachers instead of a toy.
