Just after 6:30 p.m. local time, a horrific attack took place in the small town of Kongsberg, home to some 25,000 people, 50 miles west of Oslo.

A witness told TV2: “I saw people running for their lives. There was a woman with a baby in her hand.”

An off-duty police officer was among those injured in the horrific attack, who was inside a Cop Xtra supermarket during the stampede.

He is one of two people deemed to be in intensive care.

The Royal Family of Norway offered condolences.

“We are appalled by the tragic events in Kongsberg,” the King Herald said in a letter addressed to the city’s mayor.

“The rest of the country stands with you,” wrote the 84-year-old emperor.

One told TV2: “There were crazy screams of women. I’ve never heard that. It was a cry of death.”
