Brian Laundry was seen slapping and hitting girlfriend Gabby Petito in the Utah city of Moab, weeks before his disappearance.
Police released audio from a 911 call made by a Moab resident who witnessed the couple’s violent altercation on August 12.
Police seized the couple’s Ford Transit van soon after receiving a 911 call, but the incident was not deemed serious enough to press charges.
Audio of the call, first obtained by Fox News, depicts Mr. Laundry as the assailant in the incident.
In the 49-second audio recording, the caller says, “I’m on the corner of Main St., Moonflower… I’d like to report a domestic dispute.”

Police officers who attended the incident said that Ms. Petito had tried to kill Mr. Laundry because she feared he might drive without her, causing her boyfriend to try to stop her.
The incident was deemed not serious enough to warrant allegations of domestic violence, and police sent Mr Laundry to a hotel for the night while Ms Petito stayed in the van.
According to a police incident report, attending officer Daniel Robbins said it appeared the couple were going through a “mental health crisis.” Granthshala.
The official said the couple both suffered from a mental illness, which caused them to argue more, and that they were not taking drugs during their cross-country trip in a converted Ford Transit van.
“That time created emotional tension between them and increased the number of arguments,” Mr Robbins wrote.
Ms Petito’s remains were discovered in Wyoming National Park on Sunday.
