The trailer for “The Batman,” directed by Matt Reeves, features a bullet-proof Robert Pattinson in the titular role, grunting and yelling in the now-familiar style of superhero as he lights up in the dark, beats on a series of anonymous grunts. Is.

“When that light hits the sky, it’s not just a call. It’s a warning,” echoes a voice over a shot of bat signal.

A wig-wearing Zo Kravitz comes into her role as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, and provides early looks in the trailer to Paul Dano as the Riddler and the almost unrecognizable Colin Farrell as Penguin.

“It’s a powder keg,” whispers a voice over a big explosion, “and the Riddler is the match.”

Both Riddler and Penguin put a different spin on the franchise than previous on-screen appearances. Danny DeVito played the penguin in 1992’s “Batman Returns” and Jim Carrey took on the Riddler in 1995’s “Batman Forever,” both giving the characters a more calm, campier angle than in this latest trailer.

Batman is one of the studio’s most important and lucrative franchises. According to comScore, the film series has grossed more than $5 billion at the global box office since 1989’s “Batman.” Pattinson will be the latest to join the ranks of other famous actors including Michael Keaton, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck who have worn batsuits.

Warner Bros. has taken some of DC Entertainment’s most beloved characters in a new direction and focused on more personal, and even adult-oriented storylines. “The Batman” seems to be the latest film to follow the trend.

After being delayed twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic, “The Batman” is set to hit theaters in March 2022.
