Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund made a bid to buy Toon about two years ago.

But his £300m bid was blocked by the Premier League in a piracy fight with Qatar.

Now that the Saudi government has lifted its ban on Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports, however, the deal could be completed in the coming hours.

When initial talk of the takeover surfaced, some Newcastle fans began dreaming of a star-studded team of the likes of Paris Saint-Germain ace Mbappe.

And after last night’s news, one wrote: “Could it be that Mbappe is holding off on a new contract because he knew the Newcastle acquisition would eventually happen.”

Another added: “Looks like Mbappe to Newcastle United is on. Sheik Mani to Sheikh Money.”

While a third joked: “The scene when Mbappe says ‘I’ve always loved Newcastle, I grew up watching Hatem ben Arfa’.”

The fourth quipped: “I’m not going to get ahead of myself or anything, but what number should I get on my Newcastle Mbappe top?”

22-year-old Mbappe shook PSG earlier this week that he wanted to leave Real Madrid.

He told L’Equipe: “What can force me to stay at PSG? We are far from it … because I wanted to leave Paris this summer.

“I’m not going to be a hypocrite, my ambition was clear. We’ll see what happens – my future is no longer my priority.”

“I’m attached to PSG, and if I left this summer, it would only be for Real Madrid.

“I continued to play in August and had no problems with it. Why did I want to leave?

“I thought my adventure was over. If I had left, it would have only been for Real Madrid. Leaving PSG was the next logical step.”

However, his mother confused Les Parisiens by telling him that he might sign a new deal and eventually stay.

He said: “We are currently in talks with PSG (about a contract extension) and things are going well.

“I even talked to Leonardo” [on Monday]. Will we find a compromise? One thing is for sure that he will give everything till the end to win the Champions League.”
