Chris Waddell called Newcastle to dream big in the transfer window – starting with the wooing of Paul Pogba to St James’ Park.

The French World Cup winner is yet to sign a new contract at Manchester United, whose current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

After their controversial Saudi takeover last week, Toon legend Wadal believes the sky is the limit for his former club.

He told SunSport: “Paul Pogba is not out of contract?

“Now people can say that about Newcastle – but money speaks.

“If they sell the dream about what we’re going to win and achieve, this might be it.”

Waddle, 60, also urged Newcastle to “test” the bigger teams in search of new talent that could push the North-East giants away from the bottom of the table.

He continued: “And then, do you raid the big teams?

“Your Bayern Munich and teams like that and say ‘we want him, we want him’.

“Test them. Can you kick someone like Eden Hazard out of Real Madrid? Even on loan until the end of the season and then pay the fee.

“Federico Chiesa, yes. Moussa Diaby. Anthony Martial, not suitable for Manchester United – all available. Donny van de Beek.

“And then do you test teams like Arsenal for your guys like Emil Smith Roe?

“What about Calvin Phillips at Leeds? Declan Rice. Marco Asensio at Real Madrid.

“There are a lot of talented players out there at a good age, and that’s what it’s about.

“It’s not about buying 31 or 32 year olds and thinking ‘we’ll use you for a year’ and paying a full fortune.

“It’s about building a team over the next five years.

“Yes, of course, you will add to that, get some players out.

“But the first three, four, five signings are people who you think will do a five or six year contract and be there for that period.”

The two things players want are money and trophies

Waddle also called on Toon to raid LaLiga for the best young Spanish players.

He added: “Then you start to see young talent like Yeremy Pino playing for Spain – amazing talent.

“Gavi from Barcelona. You have four or five in the Spanish team that you can build and think ‘We can get 10 to 15 years from these guys.’

With a potential influx of top talent, the expectations are skyrocketing at St. James Park.

But Waddle believes it will be three years until Toon can challenge the big boys to make the top four.

He added: “Next season you add three, four, five more players in the summer, you’re talking mid-table, if not better.

“I think the year after that you start chasing top six, top eight, then your third year you think ‘we should be top four’.

“Then as you progress from there it’s all about getting the first trophy.

“If you start winning, and you’re paying big bucks, it’s a no-lose situation because players – they want two things – money and trophies.

“You can see why people want to go to Man City, you can see why people go to Liverpool, you can see why people want to go to Man United – they’re obviously getting closer again.

“These are the two things that will attract the players. If you have that ready, to say ‘it’s going to happen’, if you sell them that three, four, five-year plan – there will be no player who will have the money they earn, He’ll turn it down.”
