The takeover of the Premier League club after the end of the Mike Ashley era has sparked excitement among fans.

Supporters want Bruce to be sacked, but Murphy has warned it may not be the best short-term option for struggling Newcastle.

Murphy told talkSPORT: “You have to be careful not to try and run before you can walk. The situation at Newcastle is uncertain right now.

“They have a manager in charge at the moment who has been there and done it in the lower echelons of the Premier League and dealt with that scenario before – even at Newcastle.

“Is there anyone they can bring who is going to be more equipped than Steve Bruce? That’s the question after all.

“You can talk about the delight of the fans and the public. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you quickly outshine Bruce and ask someone to do it better.

“I think they will get rid of it because that is what the fans want and they are trying to keep everyone happy at the moment.

“Who do they come in? There is no clear candidate to get into the fight for exile.

“If you’re asking me that’s a different conversation are there managers out there who are able to work with new players, spend money and compete.”

Newcastle are second in the league, having not won four draws in their opening seven matches.

Bruce will command his 1,000th match as manager if he remains in charge for Sunday’s home match against Tottenham.
