Nick Cave responds to The Flaming Lips’ cover of ‘Girl In Amber’

Nick Cave shares his thoughts on a recent cover of The Flaming Lips’ Bad Seeds track ‘Girl in Amber’, which he recorded with 13-year-old fan Nell Smith.

The Flaming Lips version of ‘Girl in Amber’ emerged last week as part of the entire Nick Cave cover album the band recorded with Smith. Alerted to the cover by a fan, Cave took to its Q&A website red hand files With his approval to deliver the 2016 resale version of the song ‘Skeleton Tree’.

The band had seen Smith at various shows before frontman Wayne Coyne approached them. The pair exchanged contact details and recorded a cover album together remotely during the pandemic.

“It was a really steep learning curve,” Smith said. “I hadn’t heard of Nick Cave, but Wayne suggested we should start with an album of their cover versions, and then look into recording some of their songs later.

“It was nice to hear and learn about Nick Cave and choose the songs we wanted to record.”

Earlier this week (September 4) Nick Cave performed at Fairfield Hall in Croydon with regular collaborator Warren Ellis for a show in support of their 2021 album ‘Carnage’. Granthshala has been described as “once in a generation a true songwriting partnership like no other show.”

The “Carnage” UK tour continues in October before the Bad Seeds return for a European festival show in 2022.
