“100 percent of the reason we got this is because originally Metroid wasn’t that popular in Japan”

in an interview on Kiwi Talks podcast, former Retro Studios developer Jack Matthews talks about Nintendo’s approach Metroid Prime series, and how they understood it was always more popular in the West than in Japan.
“Nintendo did not intend to [Metroid Prime] To become a third-person shooter,” Matthews said. “When we did our first prototypes we did them in third person form” […] I believe [Nintendo] Maybe we’ve seen where we basically had third person Samus walking between the doors, and then he immediately put the kibosh on him.
According to Matthews, Nintendo reiterated when they asked for the first person. Metroid Sport, that’s exactly what they meant and they intended to stick with it. Matthews further explains how and why Retro Studios ended up with development Metroid Prime,

It clearly wanted Nintendo to keep the “Western sensibility” of first-person shooters in the franchise. Initially Retro Studios was against it, but eventually the team came to the idea.
Elsewhere in the interview, Matthews talks about how Nintendo allows developers to design game prototypes that can actually fail, which is something most Western developers don’t, instead starting from the beginning. He likes to sign solid contracts.
In other news, the president of CD Projekt Red has said that the studio plans to remain independent going forward, and that it also has things in place to make a hostile takeover to prevent buying the stock.
