Nominations for the 2021 Quebec municipal elections have officially closed, and hundreds of mayors have been declared winners because no other candidates have opposed them.
Preliminary data published on the municipal elections page of the Government of Quebec shows that more than 570 mayoral candidates, representing more than half of the total positions, have been chosen by acclamation.
Eleven communities in the province still do not have candidates for mayor, and 112 councilor positions in Quebec still have no takers.
Candidates had until 4:30 pm on Friday to submit their names to appear in the ballot papers on November 7.
Quebec Municipal Affairs Minister André Laforest said in a statement that the proportion of women participating in the election had risen to 35.5 percent, up from 31.3 percent four years ago. She said she encourages citizens to vote next month.
The city of Montreal will see its current Valerie Plante running for mayor again, while in Quebec City, longtime mayor Régis Labeaume – who has held the position since 2007 – will not return to the ballot.
