The name change comes as part of the parent company’s wider transition to the Meta brand (thanks, gi.biz) Formerly known as Facebook, the rebrand took place in October 2021, with Facebook as a platform becoming a product under the broader Meta umbrella. The move was to officially put the company in a better position to take advantage of the growing “Metaverse” (though Chief Technology Officer John Carmack later expressed skepticism about the Metaverse as a concept).

Although not the focus of October, the impending change to Oculus was actually announced at the time, albeit subtly. Published by Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s VP of AR/VR facebook post Discussing the new meta identity, in which he openly confirmed that the VR platform is changing its name.

“VR will be the most immersive way for people to access the metaverse and as we look towards our goal of bringing [one billion] To the people in VR, we want to make it clear that Quest is a meta product,” Bosworth wrote. “For this reason, we are simplifying our brand architecture and moving away from the Oculus brand for our hardware. “

“Starting in early 2022, you will start to see changes over time from the Oculus Quest to Facebook to Meta Quest and the Oculus app to the Meta Quest app,” he said.

At present, this should only mean that the branding will change next spring, as Meta has yet to announce a third-generation Quest. The most recent headset in the hardware family, the Oculus Quest 2, was launched on October 13, 2020, essentially becoming the company’s only and primary VR headset.

However, dropping the Oculus name, which was acquired by then-Facebook in 2014, wasn’t easy. Bosworth wrote that “We all have a strong affinity for the Oculus brand, and it was a very difficult decision. While we are changing the brand of hardware, Oculus will continue to be a core part of our DNA and software and developer tools like Will be in things

An all-in-one device that runs games and software natively, the Quest 2 as a separate unit delivers a solid VR experience, while also being able to tether a PC for more powerful titles. The former effectively replaces the Oculus Rift devices. It offered a significant jump in optics and on-board power compared to its predecessor, so expect the inevitable “Meta Quest 3” to enjoy a similar upgrade whenever it arrives.

elsewhere, original paper mario The N64 is coming to the Nintendo Switch Online library next week, as part of an enhanced selection of titles, while former Nintendo of America boss and One Thousand Memes star Reggie Fils-Ame will be a presenter at this year’s The Game Awards.
