Congressman Ilhan Omar has defied her House of Representatives colleague Lauren Boebert, saying she was a “buffoon” for telling a “made-up” story tinged with anti-Muslim bigotry.
The Minnesota Congresswoman dismissed the incident narrated by Colorado Representative Ms. Boebert, a video clip of which went viral on social media ahead of Thanksgiving.
Ms Boebert was seen in the video talking about an alleged incident in which she was in an elevator in the Capitol building.
“I was getting into the elevator with one of my employees and he and I, we’re leaving the Capitol, we’re going back to our office. And I see a Capitol police officer speeding up the elevator. Frustration is visible all over his face. And he is reaching like the door is closing. I can’t open it. What is happening? I look to my left and he is there. Ilhan Omar. And I say ‘Well he doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine’,” Ms Boebert can be heard saying in the video.
“So we only had one destination to go… so I said ‘oh look, the jihad squad has decided to come to work today’,” she continued, and the crowd cheered.
“On Twitter his staff does the talking for him. He’s not strict personally,” she said.
Ms Omar, tweeting the video on Thursday, rubbished the allegations. “Actually, when she sees me at the Capitol then this buffoonery looks down, that remains the whole story. Sadly, she thinks that bigotry overwhelms her,” she said.
Ms Omar also condemned the Islamophobic remarks made by a far-right, gun-rights activist: “Anti-Muslim bigotry is not fun and should not be normalised. Congress cannot be a place where there is no condemnation of hateful and dangerous Muslims.
Ms Boebert has been called a “Queen Congresswoman” for saying she hoped the baseless conspiracy theory – which alleges that a monstrous global pedophile ring is at the center of the actions of most Democrat politicians and senior government officials – was true. .
Demands for his resignation rose in January after he tweeted details about Speaker Nancy Pelosi during the Capitol riots on January 6.
