‘My friends, I am still recovering very well. Today I got meetings with family members and I keep smiling every day. Pelé said on Instagram, “Thank you for the love you got.”

Pele’s daughter Kelly Nascimento also took to Instagram with a photo of the pair to reassure fans that her father was already on his way to recovery after the procedure in September.

“There’s already a lot of anxiety going around the world these days and we don’t want to be the cause,” he wrote in a post on Instagram, which includes a picture with his father in the hospital.

‘This picture has just been taken. She is wearing a vest because she is a saint and the cold in SP bothers her! He is recovering and is within normal limits. Promise!

‘He doesn’t like it when I say it so please don’t tell him but he’s an O’Keefe (sic) gentleman. After such an operation, the typical recovery scenario for a man of his age is sometimes two steps forward and one step back.

‘Yesterday (Thursday) he was tired and took a little step back. Today he took the two forward! I would like to thank again, and always, the wonderful team at Einstein here and even more for the good energy you are spreading.’

Pele was hospitalized twice in the span of six months, requiring surgery on his prostate in 2015.

In 2019, he was again admitted for a urinary infection – and in February last year, his son Edinho said Pele was reluctant to leave the house due to hip issues.

Pele revealed on 6 September that a ‘suspicious wound’ had been detected during tests, prompting surgeons to operate.

The Brazilian legend – who vowed to tackle his issues ‘with a smile’ on his face – thanked fans for their well wishes when he initially left the ICU unit on Tuesday.

He said: ‘I am happy every day, with a lot of flair to play 90 minutes as well as extra time.’

All-time great Pele has won the World Cup three times and is his country’s leading goalscorer.

After winning the World Cup three times with Brazil, Pele remains the all-time great, and is his country’s top goalscorer with 77 goals in 92 matches.

Repeating this feat in 1962 and 1970, he helped Brazil win the 1958 World Cup at the age of 17 when he had reached international acclaim.

Officially, he scored 757 goals during an illustrious career – Club Santos claims his number was closer to 1,000 – leaving him behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Joseph Biscon on the all-time list.

Additionally, he was recently toppled as the top international goal scorer in South American history when Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier last week.

Messi has recorded his huge tally in 153 caps for Argentina, while Pele has scored his 77 goals in 92 official appearances for Brazil.
