Joe Cole has heaped praise on Phil Foden after Manchester City star produced a ‘masterclass’ in his 5-1 win over Club Brugge.

The 21-year-old rolled City into the night with a surprising long-range pass to Joao Cancello, who tucked the opener into goal.

Foden played in several positions throughout the night and City’s Belgian opponents struggled to hold on to the England international.

BT Sport pundit Cole praised Foden’s performance and admitted he was disappointed with the youngster’s desire to play in a set position.

He added: ‘First of all people say he is David Silva’s replacement. Where did David Silva play at Manchester City for ten years?

‘Left, right, central midfield. Good players and great players like him (Foden) can play deep, they can hit you with that ball, they can run back, they can dribble.

‘It’s a masterclass she put on tonight I love her. He’s always alive, he’s one of those players who can get on the back foot, drive. He is just a great player.

‘Don’t concern yourself with the role. He has to play for England every minute and he has to play for Manchester City.

Co-pundit Peter Crouch concurred with Cole and said he thinks Foden is becoming as ‘impressive’ as Kevin De Bruyne for Manchester City.

Crouch said: ‘He can do everything. It will be good for the young players to see what they are doing. How he receives the ball, he is always aware, looking around him. He really can do everything.

“I think even in this Man City team full of international stars, I think he is now being as influential as Kevin De Bruyne. I think we can start talking like that about him and the fact that he’s English, he’s 21, he can play any role.

‘He’s got the best manager in trying to grow. Many managers would poke holes in the pigeons and put them on posts.

‘Joe (Cole), was a wonderfully talented footballer, but we had to pigeonhole him to the left for England. Guardiola would have played him in an independent role, not let’s do Foden’s pigeons.’

Crouch also spoke about the English star’s performance in the half-time of Manchester City’s win.

He added: ‘I’m enjoying watching him, honestly he’s really (having some fun) with him.

“We talked about him in those deep areas and I know he is considered a central striker, but when he goes deep it is really an absolute pleasure to watch.

‘Just on the ball, his balance, his weight on the pass. He has risen even deeper and deeper in every situation and he has just been an absolute joy.’

Foden missed the start of the season for City with a leg injury but has made a big impact since his return.

He was Manchester City’s best-performing player as they pulled one point away from Anfield in a 2–2 draw against Liverpool before the October international break, with Foden scoring his first goal of the season.
