Posting to Instagram, the band revealed that O’Donnell passed away yesterday (24 November), surrounded by friends and family.

“It is impossible to express the depth of sorrow in which we must declare that Gared O’Donnell, our brother, our leader, our captain, who created more love and light in this world than any of us can understand , have done so much more than that. Moved here with us in your physical form and crossed the rainbow bridge into the eternal ether,” he wrote.

“In his last days/hours, he was surrounded from afar by the love of his family, his friends, his bandmates and many others.”

O’Donnell announced his cancer diagnosis in August last year gofundme campaign has been started to help in their treatment.

The band’s statement said they expect O’Donnell to release new music he has been working on in secret in the final year of his life.

He said: “Garred spent the last years of his life doing exactly what he loved, writing and recording music. We are currently working hard to complete these many final projects.

“It’s heartbreaking to do this without him, but we know he wants us to finish what we started together. We will do our best to honor his legacy and spread that legend, which he embodied.”

Tributes have been pouring in on social media ever since the news of O’Donnell’s death was shared.

Plain Mistaken for Stars was formed in Illinois in 1997, releasing the first album ‘Fuck with Fire’ in 2001.

The band went on hiatus between 2006–2010, before O’Donnell made his final album with the band, ‘Prey’ in 2016.
