The Newport News Police Department has confirmed that students have been evacuated and sent to wait on a nearby tennis court as they investigate a shooting inside Heritage High School in Virginia.
A spokesman for the Virginia-based department told Granthshala News that police were called to the scene at 11:39 a.m. Monday.
By 12:18 pm, the police tweeted that the officers had reached the school.
“The students are being pulled out and sent to tennis courts,” police said. “Parents can meet them there.”
It is not clear whether the shooting is still on or whether anyone has been injured.
US Senator Mark Warner of Virginia tweeted that he is “closely monitoring the horrific reports.”
“While praying for the health and safety of all those involved, we look forward to learning more,” the tweet said.
Congressman Bobby Scott, who represents the state’s third congressional district, reiterated on Twitter that police are “advising all parents to pick their students off the school’s tennis courts.”
