German professional beach volleyball stars Karla Borger and Julia Sood said that on Sunday they would not go to Qatar for a tournament over the issue of their dress attire.
Borreger represented Germany at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but lost in the round of 16 with the team to Bretta Butte. The pair won silver at the 2013 Beach Volleyball World Championships. Sood partnered mostly with Chantal Labour during his career. . Sood and Borgar have been teammates since 2019.

“We are there to do our work, but are being prevented from wearing our work clothes,” Borger told a German radio station. “It’s really the only country and the only tournament where a government tells us how we have to do our job – we’re criticizing it.”
Borger said that given the extreme temperatures in the Middle East, “we are asking if it is necessary to hold a tournament there.”
The women’s part of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour will travel to Doha, Qatar for the first time next month. Women players have been asked to wear long shirts and trousers for the event Guardian.

According to The Guardian, the FIVB states that the request was “out of respect for the culture and traditions of the host country.”

The Qatar Volleyball Association said that the athletes were allowed to wear their national uniforms, according to Yahoo.
“We want to make it clear that we are not making any demands on what athletes should wear,” the organization said.
