Tottenham could make history and win their first Premier League title if they snatch Hakim Ziyech from bitter rivals Chelsea, according to their former player Rafael van der Vaart.

Antonio Conte’s side have had a solid start to the season and are third after 13 games – five points behind leaders Arsenal.

During the Champions League coverage on Wednesday, van der Vaart told Ziggo Sport: ‘Hakim Ziyech has to join Tottenham.’

‘If Tottenham can get Hakim Ziyech, they can win the Premier League. I’m serious.’

The 29-year-old has struggled to make an impact since his £33million move from Ajax in 2020.

This season, he has had to make a habit of occupying a single spot on Chelsea’s bench, with Ziyech an unused sub in nine of Chelsea’s 17 games in all competitions.

Ziyech’s Chelsea Career

2020-21 – 39 appearances (16 from the bench), 6 goals, 4 assists

Ziyech had explored the possibility of leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window, with Spurs, Manchester United and AC Milan all linked.

Van der Vaart’s Zigo Sport colleague and Dutch legend Marco van Basten said it was ‘a pity for the whole of football’ that Ziyech is stuck on the bench.

‘Another transfer window is coming. This is sad and a shame. Ziyech is a great player. We have to see such a player, we watch TV for such a player and we come to the stadium.

‘It is a pity for the whole of football that he is on the bench. If these kind of players don’t get minutes then it is not good for football.

‘There really should be a rule that clubs can only have a certain number of players.

‘so they [Chelsea] Too much and it actually makes football less interesting. A player like Ziyech can play in another club and entertain the fans.

If he were to sensationally join Tottenham, Ziyech would still face a lot of competition against the likes of Son Heung-min and Richardson.

The claims made on Dutch television can probably be explained by his influence at Ajax, where he scored 49 goals in 165 appearances.

Ziyech was part of the Ajax squad that was famously knocked out by Spurs in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.

Since joining Chelsea, he has made 90 appearances and scored 14 goals.
