Varane is currently with France ahead of Euro 2020, a tournament in which the defending world champions enter as favourites.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is targeting a centre-half signing this summer to partner with captain Harry Maguire as the Old Trafford club looks to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title last season.

Maguire’s absence with an ankle injury in the final games of the campaign, which included Villarreal’s final UEFA Europa League defeat, highlighted how the squad’s other defenders have not lived up to his standard.

Signing a proven winner like Varane would certainly be the solution. His 360 appearances for Real in more than 10 seasons has seen four Champions League victories as well as three Spanish league titles.

With only one year left on his current contract and without any clear commitment to sign a new one, it appears Varane will be out the exit door of his compatriot and manager Zinedine Zidane.

Indeed, Real will have to sell this year to make sure they still get full market value for their major player and avoid losing it next year.

Varane played 41 matches in all competitions for Real last season but it proved to be a disappointing campaign as they finished second in LaLiga behind Atletico Madrid and were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea in the semi-finals.

A leg injury sidelined Verne for the second leg of that semi-final bout in an added disappointment.

Other joint priorities include a right-sided attacker with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho on their shopping list.

The German club has rejected United’s £67m opening bid for the England star and is out for £80m.
