If he misses four weeks – in a worst-case scenario – Lukaku will miss league games against Norwich, Newcastle and Burnley, as well as a League Cup tie with Southampton and a return fixture against Malmö.

After a stellar start to his second spell in west London, Lukaku has been struggling in his last seven matches without a goal in the recent past.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel worried about his side The victory over Malmö would be followed by several weeks without Lukaku and Werner.

But the German insisted that he had made the right call for both men to start against the Swedish miners.

‘If I had known in advance what would happen I wouldn’t have done it but how could you have known it earlier?’ Tuchel said.

‘It was important that Romelu was on the pitch. He started off strong, I talked to him about it, talked to him about mental fatigue.

‘But he is our number nine and our context is in front. And the best thing for mental fatigue is a goal. We knew we could be the dominant team with Mason (Mt) and Timo around him and as the reference in front of him.

‘And I firmly believed that he could turn things around in terms of scoring and being decisive.

‘He was super strong in our start and so did he. He took a foul to win the first penalty, so it’s probably not 2-0 without him. I don’t regret it because it’s not a muscle injury.

‘It was a moment to give him confidence and let him play and I don’t regret it.

‘These things can happen and that’s bad luck. Maybe I don’t know more about injuries than anyone else. Romelu spins his ankle on a foul in the box, and Timo has a hamstring injury.

‘Both of these will take some time, and we’ll need more exams to be precise. But he will be out for a few matches.
