Ronaldo’s winning goal against Villarreal in the last minute of injury-time of Wednesday night’s Champions League match was warmly welcomed.

The crowd remained calm for most of the game as United were largely outplayed by their Spanish opponents – but the atmosphere prevailed after Alex Telles’ 60th-minute leveller.

Now Ronaldo has called on Red Devils supporters to support him throughout the game.

He said: “Sometimes players, we try to do our job, play well and score goals – but sometimes that’s not possible.

“The fans also have a role to play when the team is in tough times. We should push them. So I call them and ask if they can do it.

“They inspire us to keep going and keep running and keep believing.

“So that’s what we felt. We’re very happy. A very important win and we’re in a good position now.”

After celebrating the Champions League milestone the same night, Ronaldo admitted that his goal was “another beautiful chapter” in his career.

It was the Portugal star’s 178th appearance in the competition, a record that surpassed that of his former Real Madrid teammate Iker Casillas.

And his goal was his fifth in as many games since returning to United from Juventus in the summer.

Ronaldo said: “Unbelievable! Another chapter, another beautiful chapter, so I’m very happy with the winning goal and the way I did it.

“Most appearances in history and one goal to score. A great night.”
