Wayne Rooney has admitted that when he was 18, he punched holes in every door of his rented house after a phone brawl with childhood girlfriend Colleen.
Then new teammate Rio Ferdinand found him on the floor after kicking him at the end door, trapping his leg and falling.
Wayne, now 35 and manager of Derby, signed for Manchester United in 2004 from Everton for £30 million.
He told boxer Tony Bellew in a podcast: “I was going on a night out with the boys so I called Colleen. I think she was in Liverpool at the time.
“You know when you’re that age, you argue a lot.
“Anyway, she’s on the move. So I’m in this rented house and I went round every door in the house and made a hole in it.
“And then I lost my head again and I completely broke the door. Then came the Rio goal. “
Rooney and Colleen, who met when she was just 12, married in 2008 and have four children.
The striker joined Manchester United in 2004 at the age of just 18 for £20 million, the largest fee ever paid for a player under the age of 20.
He made 354 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring 183 goals.
Rooney left the club and returned to his first team, Everton, in 2017, scoring 10 Premier League goals in a season before moving to DC United in the US.
His last side as a player was Derby County, where he retired and is now manager.
