The boat reportedly sank after 7:10 pm

Four Montreal firefighters responded to distress signals from another boat in the area.

The rescue boat itself overturned after picking up two people who called for help.

Although it is not clear why the accident happened, rescuers were able to save everyone except the firefighter, who is still missing.

“So the people they rescued went into the water with the firefighters,” said Longueil Fire Division chief Stephen DiFrusia. “But now, except for one firefighter, all those people are accounted for.”

The Montreal Police, Surte du Québec (SQ), Coast Guard, as well as firefighters from Montreal and Longueuil took part in the search. An SQ helicopter was also at the spot.

Firefighters asked that the public avoid the intersection of 75th Avenue and LaSalle Blvd. As the search was on.
