ECSTATIC Alan Shearer is “dare to hope again” as Newcastle stars past and present welcome Newcastle’s £300 million Saudi Arabian takeover.
Toon legend, former England teammate Michael Owen and even Ant Ann December celebrated the purchase of controversial club owner Mike Ashley.
The Premier League approved a takeover that could turn Newcastle into one of European football’s mega-spenders after receiving “legally binding assurances” that the Saudi state will not control the club.
And BBC pundit Shearer posted: “Yesssssssss. We can dare to hope again.”
But the reaction from fans of second-bottom magpies was mixed.
Some welcomed the purchase because it should mean a huge cash injection.
But others mourned Newcastle’s association with a country that was heavily criticized for its human rights record.
Nonetheless, former Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle striker Owen led to optimistic positions from big-name followers.
He wrote: “Such great news for everyone involved @NUFC. The new ownership is exactly what the club needed. With renewed optimism, it could be a game changer for the club.”
And Toons midfielder Isaac Hayden, 26, tweeted: “Exciting times for the club and Newcastle City. Enjoy your cans #NUFC fans.”
Geordi TV presenters Ant and Dec posted: “Oh what a beautiful day.”
Hayden and the Saturday Night Takeaway duo were responding to the official confirmation of the deal by Newcastle on Thursday evening.

The buyout has strongly tipped manager Steve Bruce to the ax.
High-profile men now linked to the lucrative St James’ Park job include 5/1 stakes ex-Chelsea chief Antonio Conte and former Everton Toons boss Rafa Benitez at 9/1.
