Born in East London, Southend West, 69, was MP Since 1997 – and was a strong supporter of the city’s bid for city status.

St. Peters. a service in church In Eastwood Lane, where Sir David was murdered, a Friday evening was held to commemorate him – where he was described as “Mr Southend” by a priest.

Church falls silent as Father Jeffrey Woolnoff pays tribute to him conservative MPs and their constituents were invited to remember him.

He put up a picture of Sir David in front of the church, and said: “This worship is one I was not expecting to lead today.

“The whole world is sad. This month we pray for the peace of dear David’s soul.

“Have you ever known Sir David Ames without that happy smile on his face? Because the greeting he always gave you was that happy smile.

“They have that great East London spirit without being afraid and being able to talk to people and the level they are at. I would say not all politicians are good at it.”

About 80 people attended the service and were heard recounting their memories of Sir David as Father Woolen.

He said: “When you can talk to your MP and you can talk and set a house on fire like a fire, then you can talk to him later about things that are important to your area. Huh.

“What can we say? He died doing the work he loved, met his constituents, his local people.”

Father Woolnow said his constituents could count on Sir David, adding: “He was always available. We have no words tonight.

“Dear Sir David, rest.”

Those who attended the vigil were invited to light a candle and share their memories of Sir David. A lone candle outside the church was lit as Tory MP constituents remembered him.
