Sir Lindsay Hoyle pays tribute to Sir David Ames

Sir Lindsay described how the past few days have been “the darkest weekend” since the fatal stabbing of a Tory MP for Southend West on Friday.

“David was a very good friend of all of us,” he said while speaking on LBC radio.

“Sir David brought warmth. He was a politician who loved his job, got the best out of the job, so he got a lot out of the constituents who loved him.

“He was popular throughout the House. He has done something that we all would love to do..He has united the politicians and not only brought us together in misery but also ensured that the democratic process survives.

The president emphasized: “My condolences are with his wife Julia and family.

“It’s the darkest weekend for me.”

Appealing for change in politics without “hatred and cynicism” for the killing, he said: “Today we can make a fresh start.

“Today we can have Sir David’s legacy where we have good politics, a good parliament, good politics around the world.

“We need to come together, think about the language we use.

“Let’s have political differences. I’m there to referee, but we don’t need the hate and cynicism because if we’re kind to each other the public will be kinder, and of course the media has a role to play in that.
