And the England ace says playing abroad is still something that draws him in between interest from Barcelona and others.

SunSport revealed on Tuesday that the 26-year-old former Liverpool player has put contract talks at the Etihad on hold after a tough few months.

Sterling has less than two years left on his current deal and wants to know how much he will play before signing a new deal.

The star is happy to have adapted to play as a striker for City instead of his usual left-wing role – but that position needs game time to improve.

Sterling, a three-time Prem title winner, said: “If there was an option to go elsewhere for more of the game, I would be up for it.

“Football is the most important thing for me – the challenges that I set myself from a young age and also the dreams.

“As an English player, I only know the Premier League.

“I’ve always thought that maybe one day I’d love to play abroad – see how I come up against that challenge.

“I really should learn a few different languages. I love the French accent and Spanish.”

Barca are monitoring his situation and could make a move in January, although sources at Etihad say the club will not approve a move mid-season.

Sterling is believed to have spoken with boss Pep Guardiola about his position at City, but has generally kept his head down and focused on football.

Despite losing his place in the team, his attitude and professionalism have impressed the club’s staff.

And he told FT Live: “I’m not the kind of person who’s going to complain. I haven’t tried to make it a bigger deal than it really is.

“I get into my work, do what I want to do. And I’m just raring to go – playing matches regularly, scoring goals regularly.”

Sterling’s chances of playing more at City are likely to be boosted by fellow forward Ferran Torres for at least a month after fracturing his leg on international duty with Spain.

Guardiola is unlikely to be impressed that Torres was asked to play in the Nations League final against France despite being injured in the last four clash with Italy.

Yet it could benefit Sterling by giving him several games.

Asked about his ambitions for the future, Sterling said: “Staying humble, keeping that hard-working spirit, chasing the next goal.

“Setting goals, trying to do better than last season, getting better numbers than last season.

“Keeping up that appetite—that’s the only way you can get better.”
